Tragedy Strikes Wayanad: Three Dead and Seven Missing After Tunnel Site Landslide

Wed, Jul 8, 2026(45d ago)World

A devastating landslide at the Kalladi tunnel construction site in Kerala’s Wayanad district has left three people dead and seven others missing. The incident, which occurred near the Meenakshi Bridge in Meppadi, caught 18 people—including project workers, security staff, and supervisors—in the debris. Emergency services, including multiple NDRF teams, were immediately deployed to the area to conduct intensive search and rescue operations. Nine injured individuals have been transported to the Meppadi WIMS Hospital, while local authorities have established a relief camp at a nearby government school to accommodate displaced residents.

State officials have labeled the catastrophe a "man-made" disaster, pointing to serious lapses in safety protocols. According to government representatives, Konkan Railways had been warned by the District Disaster Management Authority to clear excavated soil from the site to mitigate landslide risks, but these directives were reportedly ignored. As rescue efforts continue, leaders are calling for strict accountability, emphasizing that the tragedy could have been prevented had proactive measures been taken. The state government is currently monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with central disaster management agencies to assess the damage and support those affected.
