Building Collapse in Pune Follows Heavy Rains as Monsoon Intensifies Across India

Wed, Jul 8, 2026(45d ago)World

A residential building collapse in Pimpri-Chinchwad, near Pune, has left over a dozen people trapped after a massive landslide triggered by relentless rainfall struck the site on Wednesday. The incident occurred when a large mound of waste, destabilized by downpours, collapsed onto the administrative block of a local municipal project. Emergency responders, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local fire crews, are currently on-site conducting rescue operations to reach the estimated 15 to 16 individuals still missing. This tragedy comes as the region grapples with severe flooding, forcing the relocation of 6,000 residents across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The situation across Maharashtra remains critical, with the India Meteorological Department maintaining a red alert for the state's mountainous ghat regions due to the ongoing threat of landslides. Popular tourist spots like Sinhagad Fort have been shuttered to ensure public safety, while authorities in Nashik and Igatpuri remain on high alert for potential cloudbursts. Beyond Maharashtra, the monsoon’s revival has brought significant rainfall to the Delhi-NCR region, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Amidst these conditions, Home Minister Amit Shah has reached out to the leaders of affected states, including Gujarat, Kerala, and Jammu & Kashmir, to coordinate disaster management efforts and promise federal support to mitigate the impact of the heavy downpours.
