India’s Mission Karmayogi Shifts Toward AI-Driven Governance
India is modernizing its administrative framework through Mission Karmayogi, a flagship initiative designed to enhance the efficiency of 88 union ministries by integrating artificial intelligence into governance. According to Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh, the program aims to bridge the gap between technology and public service, creating a more responsive civil service. This shift is already yielding results, evidenced by the surge in grievances handled by the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System, which has grown from 200,000 cases in 2014 to nearly 3 million today—a clear indicator of rising public trust.
The initiative employs the iGOTKarmayogi platform, which currently supports 16.5 million users and offers over 5,000 courses. By utilizing AI tools like AI Sarthi and AI Tutor, the government is fostering a culture of continuous learning, competency mapping, and personalized professional development for officials. While recent rankings highlight significant performance gaps between top-performing departments, such as the Ministry of Coal, and those lagging behind, the mission remains dynamic. As global interest grows—with delegations from countries like Brazil and organizations like the Asian Development Bank looking to emulate the model—India continues to refine its framework to ensure a future-ready bureaucracy.
