India’s Election Commission Makes Parental Details Compulsory for New Voter Registration
The Election Commission of India has introduced a new requirement for first-time voters, mandating the inclusion of parental details during the registration process. According to officials, this policy change is designed to streamline the enrollment experience by reducing the overall volume of supporting documentation required from applicants. This initiative, which debuted during last year’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, is now being rolled out across various states and union territories to simplify the verification of new, eligible voters who have recently turned 18.
Beyond simplifying registration, the move is a core component of the Commission's broader effort to sanitize India’s massive electoral database. By conducting house-to-house verifications, the EC aims to purge the rolls of duplicate, deceased, or ineligible entries. This extensive cleanup process has already resulted in the removal of over 55 million names across several regions. With nearly a billion registered voters across the country, these revisions are essential for maintaining accurate records in populous states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Bihar, ensuring that the electoral system remains both efficient and credible.
