Yemen Reopens Airspace Following Airport Strike Tensions

Tue, Jul 14, 2026(2h ago)World

Yemen’s civil aviation authority has officially resumed flight operations after a brief suspension triggered by a military strike on Sanaa airport. The shutdown occurred after the internationally recognized Yemeni government claimed responsibility for targeting the facility, a move explicitly intended to prevent an Iranian aircraft carrying a Houthi delegation from landing. Despite the government's efforts to intercept the flight, Houthi officials later confirmed that the plane had successfully touched down on Yemeni soil, purportedly transporting medical patients and stranded citizens returning from Tehran.

In response to the volatile situation, the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has issued an urgent call for restraint. Emphasizing the need for diplomatic dialogue, Grundberg stated that his office is in active communication with military representatives from all factions to prevent further escalation. The international community remains concerned that such incidents could spark a renewed cycle of violence, and the UN envoy is pushing both the Iran-backed Houthi rebels and the recognized government to prioritize peace over military confrontation.
