Iran Parliament Proposes New Strait of Hormuz Security Bill
Tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz have intensified as Iran’s parliament officially introduced a new bill aimed at asserting control over the vital maritime route. Ebrahim Azizi, the head of the national security committee, confirmed the move on social media, noting that the legislative action coincides with rising military friction between Tehran and Washington. This policy, titled the "Strategic Action for the Security and Sustainable Progress of the Strait of Hormuz," serves as a direct challenge to U.S. influence in the region, with Iranian officials signaling that further measures to protect their maritime interests are currently being prepared.
The geopolitical standoff follows the collapse of recent diplomatic efforts to finalize a peace agreement, as disagreements over the management of the strait reach a breaking point. While Tehran is pushing to levy fees on passing commercial vessels to assert its sovereignty, the United States has categorically rejected these demands, with President Trump recently announcing plans to oversee the waterway and reinstate a blockade on Iranian ports. With the Iranian parliament back in session, lawmakers remain deeply divided; many are openly hostile toward the ongoing negotiations, criticizing the government for a lack of transparency regarding the memorandum of understanding signed with the U.S. last month.
