India Demands Answers Following Fatal Missile Strike on Commercial Tankers

Tue, Jul 14, 2026(1h ago)World

The Indian government has officially summoned Iran’s deputy ambassador in New Delhi to express its outrage after Iranian cruise missiles struck the tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah in the Strait of Hormuz. The attack resulted in the tragic death of an Indian crew member and left eight others injured—including six Indians and two Ukrainians—with four of the survivors suffering from serious wounds. The vessel was navigating the southern shipping lane within Omani territorial waters when the incident occurred, marking yet another perilous development for merchant mariners in the region.

In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs labeled these recurring attacks as “deeply worrisome,” demanding an immediate end to the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure. India has urgently called for a de-escalation of regional tensions, emphasizing that the freedom of navigation and secure international commerce must be upheld in accordance with global maritime laws. This latest tragedy follows a string of similar incidents involving Indian sailors in the area, highlighting an alarming trend of violence that has claimed 14 Indian lives since February, prompting the government to continue its firm diplomatic push for stability and accountability.
