Hantavirus Outbreak: MV Hondius Cruise Ship Docks in Rotterdam

Mon, May 18, 2026(95d ago)World

A luxury cruise ship, the MV Hondius, has finally arrived at the port of Rotterdam following a distressing outbreak of hantavirus that claimed three lives during its voyage. Upon docking at a remote peninsula, authorities initiated a controlled disembarkation of the remaining 25 crew members and medical personnel. While the ship is now being subjected to a rigorous, week-long disinfection process by specialists—covering everything from ventilation systems to individual cabins—the Dutch National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) has confirmed that none of those currently leaving the vessel are displaying symptoms of the illness.

The World Health Organization and local officials have emphasized that the broader public health risk remains minimal, stressing that this situation is not comparable to the COVID-19 pandemic. The outbreak, identified as the Andes virus strain, has been closely monitored since early May, with all potentially exposed individuals currently under strict quarantine and observation. While the vessel is sanitized, those involved in the ship’s operation, including the deceased victims, have been handled with careful protocols, ensuring that the remaining crew can safely complete their isolation period in pre-arranged mobile units near the port.
