Tragedy Strikes San Diego Mosque: Three Killed in Targeted Attack
A devastating shooting occurred on Monday at the Islamic Center of San Diego, leaving three people dead, including a heroic security guard who authorities say likely prevented a higher casualty count. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl confirmed that the two suspects, aged 18 and 17, were found dead in a vehicle a few blocks away from the mosque, having apparently taken their own lives. Prior to the attack, one of the suspects' mothers had alerted police that her son was suicidal and had absconded with several weapons and her car, triggering an initial search near a local high school before the violence shifted to the mosque.
Law enforcement is currently treating the incident as a hate crime, with Chief Wahl noting that clear hateful rhetoric was involved in the lead-up to the tragedy. While the mosque’s school, staff, and children remained safe, the attack has sent shockwaves through the community. Officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, have condemned the violence, asserting that places of worship must remain sanctuaries. As the investigation continues, authorities and community leaders are standing in solidarity with the victims, emphasizing that such acts of terror and Islamophobia have no place in California or anywhere else.
