Over 1 Million Indian Pharmacists Call for Nationwide Strike Amid E-Pharmacy Concerns
Approximately 1.25 million chemists and pharmacists across India are set to strike on Wednesday, May 20, to voice their strong opposition to the rapid rise of e-pharmacies and instant medicine delivery services. The All-India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) is spearheading the protest, arguing that these digital platforms operate in a regulatory gray area that facilitates the sale of drugs via fake or incorrect prescriptions. Beyond safety concerns, the union is calling for stricter government oversight to combat the predatory pricing and deep discounting tactics used by corporate-backed online apps, which they claim make it impossible for independent, local pharmacies to remain competitive.
Despite the call for a national shutdown, the Indian government has reassured the public that essential medicine supplies will remain unaffected, noting that several pharmacy associations across states like Maharashtra, Kerala, and West Bengal have opted not to participate. Meanwhile, other industry bodies, including the Indian Pharmacist Association, have distanced themselves from the strike, suggesting that such disruptions fail to address the core challenges facing the profession. As the government examines the AIOCD’s grievances through the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, the debate highlights an ongoing tension between the modernization of medical retail and the need for a robust, uniform legal framework to ensure patient safety.
