India Launches Massive Probe into Hundreds of Entities Over Suspected Illegal Foreign Remittances
The Indian Income Tax Department has initiated a sweeping nationwide investigation into 394 companies and 36 individuals suspected of laundering money abroad via shell firms and falsified paperwork. Triggered by a tip-off involving fictitious charitable trusts that were faking donations, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) uncovered a pattern where entities with minimal or no tax filings were moving suspiciously large sums of money overseas. Authorities noted that the stated reasons for these transfersâsuch as software imports or freight paymentsâoften failed to align with the actual business operations of the entities involved, many of which did not even exist at their registered addresses.
A significant focus of the probe is the questionable role of professionals who issued Form 15CB certificates, which are mandatory to authorize foreign remittances. Investigators discovered that a small circle of accountants had issued a disproportionate number of these certificates, often without performing the necessary due diligence required by law. As the investigation intensifies, the department is scrutinizing firms across the country, with special attention paid to entities operating near Indiaâs land borders. Tax officials have issued a stern warning to professionals, emphasizing that they must exercise rigorous judgment and verify the authenticity of transactions, as further investigations into these financial networks continue.
