Syria Sentences Bashar al-Assad’s Cousin to Death for War Crimes
In a significant move toward accountability, a Syrian court has handed down a death sentence to Wassim al-Assad, a cousin of the former longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad. Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan presided over the case, declaring that Wassim was guilty of numerous murders characterized by extreme brutality and torture. The court officially classified these heinous acts as war crimes and crimes against humanity, leading to the capital punishment ruling.
This verdict follows a prior sentencing delivered just one week earlier, where Wassim al-Assad was condemned in absentia for his role in the country’s protracted civil war. Having fled to Moscow with his family as opposition forces gained control of Damascus in December 2024, he has become a primary target for the nation's new transitional authorities. These judicial proceedings represent a landmark effort to hold former regime figures accountable, with other high-ranking officials—such as security official Atif Naguib—also receiving death sentences as the country begins to reconcile with its tumultuous past.
