Indian National Arrested Following Multi-Million Dollar Elder Fraud Scheme
A 21-year-old Indian national, Jay Sunilbharthi Goswami, has been apprehended after allegedly serving as a "money mule" in a sophisticated fraud ring targeting elderly victims across the United States. Authorities claim that Goswami played a pivotal role in a scam that manipulated victimsâranging in age from 59 to 87âinto believing their financial accounts were compromised. Under this guise, the victims were coerced into liquidating their assets, handing over significant quantities of cash and gold. Investigators report that the scheme resulted in losses exceeding $7.5 million, with Goswami personally involved in at least nine separate collection instances throughout New York and New Jersey.
Following his initial court appearance in August 2026, Goswami was granted a conditional release, which he promptly violated by fleeing across the border into Canada. He was intercepted by Canadian law enforcement at the Toronto airport while attempting to board a flight to Doha, Qatar. Currently in custody, he is awaiting extradition back to the United States to face formal charges of wire fraud and money laundering. Officials uncovered evidence linking him to the illicit operation through various bank deposits, suggesting he profited directly from his activities as a courier for the criminal enterprise.
