Strong Earthquake Shakes Tokyo, Leaving Dozens Injured

Sun, Aug 23, 2026(48m ago)World

A powerful 5.9 magnitude earthquake jolted the Tokyo metropolitan area early Sunday morning, triggering emergency sirens and sending alert notifications to residents' phones across the region. Centered in the southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 68 kilometers, the tremor caused widespread disruption, including the temporary suspension of several regional train lines. While the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed there was no risk of a tsunami, the seismic activity was strong enough to damage buildings and cause a burst water main in the capital.

At least 37 people sustained minor injuries during the event, including an elderly woman in Yokohama who suffered a hip fracture while attempting to evacuate her home. Authorities are currently assessing the structural integrity of the impacted areas, noting that the risk of landslides remains high due to heavy rainfall that preceded the quake. As the region begins recovery efforts, officials are urging residents to remain vigilant, warning that strong aftershocks could continue to occur throughout the coming days.
