Deadly Flash Floods Strike Afghanistan as Death Toll Rises
A series of devastating flash floods triggered by intense rainfall has claimed the lives of at least 24 people across Afghanistan over the past two days. Local officials report that the northern province of Baghlan bore the brunt of the disaster with 15 fatalities, while additional deaths were recorded in Badakhshan and Wardak provinces. Beyond the tragic loss of life, the storms have left dozens injured and caused significant structural damage, including the total destruction of over 100 homes in Badakhshan.
This latest surge in extreme weather follows a period of persistent, heavy rain that has battered various provinces since late March, frequently causing landslides and widespread crop destruction. Vulnerable regions with underdeveloped infrastructure remain at the highest risk, as the nation continues to struggle with the compounding effects of climate change. With a death toll that had already reached nearly 150 people during Aprilâs rainy season, the country remains on high alert as it grapples with these recurring and increasingly severe environmental challenges.
