Identity of the Gunman in White House Shooting
The individual killed by Secret Service agents following a shooting near the White House on Saturday evening has been identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best. Authorities confirmed that Best, a Maryland native who had been residing in Washington D.C. for over a year, opened fire near the executive mansion’s security perimeter, leading to a fatal exchange of gunfire that also resulted in injuries to a bystander. President Donald Trump, who was inside the building at the time, remained unharmed, and officials have emphasized that the residence was never breached.
Reports indicate that Best had a documented history of mental health struggles and previous run-ins with the Secret Service, including an arrest in July 2025 for attempting to gain unauthorized access to the White House grounds, which had resulted in a psychiatric evaluation. Witnesses described a chaotic scene shortly after 6 p.m., as tourists and journalists scrambled for cover upon hearing what sounded like dozens of gunshots. The area was quickly locked down by law enforcement and National Guard units while the situation was brought under control.
