US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Clarifies Green Card Rule Changes

Sun, May 24, 2026(90d ago)World

During his recent visit to New Delhi, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed growing anxieties regarding new immigration regulations that could impact thousands of Indian nationals awaiting green cards. Rubio emphasized that these adjustments are part of a global policy shift rather than a measure specifically directed at India. He acknowledged that the transition period might present some initial challenges, but attributed the strict changes to the urgent need to manage a broader migration crisis within the United States, where over 20 million people have reportedly entered the country illegally in recent years.

Looking ahead, Rubio expressed optimism that the Trump administration’s modernization efforts will ultimately yield a more efficient immigration framework. He suggested that once the system is fully reformed, it could prove even more advantageous for Indian professionals who contribute to innovation and the US economy. Meanwhile, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised concerns regarding the difficulties faced by legitimate travelers in securing visas. During their bilateral discussions, Jaishankar stressed that while India remains committed to tackling irregular migration, it is vital that these new policies do not hinder legal mobility, which remains a cornerstone of the two nations' collaboration in technology and research.
