Sri Lanka Launches Free Visa Program for 40 Countries

Mon, May 25, 2026(90d ago)World

In a major move to boost its tourism sector, Sri Lanka has officially launched a free Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme for citizens of 40 nations, including India, the UAE, and Pakistan. Effective from May 25, the initiative covers travelers holding all types of passports—be it ordinary, diplomatic, or official. While the visa processing is now free of charge, officials have clarified that any visa fees paid by travelers prior to this date remain non-refundable.

Under this new policy, eligible tourists are granted a 30-day stay with the added benefit of double-entry permissions. While the initial entry is free, those who wish to extend their visit beyond the 30-day limit will be required to apply for a formal visa extension and pay the associated fees. Additionally, travelers from the Maldives are granted a special 90-day tourist visa as part of a unique bilateral arrangement between the two countries. Travelers are advised to ensure they secure their ETA before departing for their trip to ensure a seamless entry process.
