Tragic Truck Accident in Eastern Afghanistan Claims 18 Lives
A heartbreaking road accident in eastern Afghanistan resulted in the deaths of 18 people, including 10 children, after their truck overturned on the route between Jalalabad and Kabul. According to Laghman province officials, the victims were part of a group of Afghan families returning home from Pakistan following the Eid Al Adha holiday. In addition to the fatalities, which included five women and three men, 29 other passengers sustained injuries. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid expressed deep sorrow over the incident and offered prayers for those currently recovering in medical care.
This tragedy highlights the perilous reality of travel in Afghanistan, where crumbling infrastructure and reckless driving frequently lead to deadly road mishaps. The incident occurred against the backdrop of an ongoing migration crisis, as thousands of Afghans return from Pakistan amid stricter government policies in the neighboring country. With nearly 450,000 Afghans having crossed back into their homeland this year alone, many families are forced to travel in overcrowded, makeshift transport, significantly increasing the risk of such devastating accidents.
