UAE Strengthens Intellectual Property Landscape with Locarno Convention Accession
The United Arab Emirates has taken a significant leap in bolstering its intellectual property framework by officially joining the Locarno Agreement. This international treaty, which standardizes the classification system for industrial designs, was formalized during the 68th session of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) assemblies in Geneva. According to the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, this strategic move aligns the UAEās design protection systems with rigorous global standards, simplifying the registration and cross-border comparability of industrial assets.
Parallel to this diplomatic milestone, the UAE has seen a surge in intellectual property activity during the first half of 2026. The nation recorded 17,217 trademark registrations, while patent applications grew by approximately 12 percent compared to the same period in 2025. This growth is bolstered by a broader strategy that includes over 60 initiatives, such as the regionās first digital trademark marketplace. These efforts have successfully maintained the UAEās status as a leader in the Global Innovation Index, further fueled by the country's aggressive adoption of artificial intelligence and its ongoing commitment to combating digital piracy.
