WestJet Flight Attendants Walk Out, Grounding Hundreds of Flights

Sun, Aug 2, 2026(45d ago)Business

Travelers across Canada faced significant disruption this past Sunday as thousands of WestJet flight attendants officially launched a strike. The walkout, initiated by the Canadian Union of Public Employees, grounded over 300 flights as the union and the airline failed to bridge the gap in contract negotiations. At the heart of the dispute is a push for a fundamental change in compensation: attendants are demanding to be paid from the moment they check in until they clock out, rather than only during the time an aircraft is in motion.

While WestJet’s CEO, Alexis von Hoensbroech, stated that the company had offered double-digit wage increases and adjustments to pre- and post-flight pay, the union maintained that the proposal fell short of their needs. As the busy summer travel season hits its peak, the airline has shifted its focus to refunding or rebooking stranded passengers, while federal officials have urged both sides to return to the bargaining table. The union remains hopeful that the government will refrain from intervening, even as they continue to fight for a new pay structure that mirrors broader labor movements across North America.
