Global Oil Market Faces Uncertainty Amid Escalating Saudi Infrastructure Attacks

Wed, Sep 16, 2026(58m ago)Business

Oil prices experienced an uptick on Tuesday as markets reacted to renewed hostilities targeting Saudi Arabian energy infrastructure. The forced closure of the critical East-West Pipeline, caused by recent drone and missile strikes from Houthi forces, has stoked fears regarding global supply stability. With traders concerned that repairs could take weeks rather than days, Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate futures saw immediate gains. Analysts warn that the disruption of this pipeline, which serves as a vital bypass to the Strait of Hormuz, could threaten up to 4% of the global oil supply if operations do not resume promptly.

The situation is further complicated by rising regional tensions and simultaneous reports of supply chain disruptions elsewhere. Goldman Sachs has highlighted that the intensity of these attacks significantly increases the risk of Brent crude prices surging past the $120 per barrel mark, with some estimates suggesting a climb toward $130 if the pipeline remains offline for an extended period. Adding to the market's anxiety, data indicates a noticeable drop in vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, while ongoing drone strikes against Russian refineries have further restricted diesel production, creating a challenging environment for global energy security.
