UAE Becomes a Key Hub for India’s Expanding UPI and RuPay Network
The United Arab Emirates is rapidly solidifying its role as a central pillar in the international expansion of India’s digital payment ecosystem. According to recent data from NPCI International, the UAE is now integrated into India's network through UPI and RuPay card acceptance, as well as broader domestic payment infrastructure partnerships. This move aligns with a larger global push by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to extend its footprint, with UPI merchant services now active across 11 nations. By enabling Indian travelers to use local QR codes via familiar UPI-enabled apps, the initiative is effectively reducing the reliance on physical cash and cards for international transactions.
This growth trajectory is underpinned by the staggering success of the Unified Payments Interface within India, which saw a record-breaking 24.5 billion transactions worth roughly $315 billion in August alone. With over 500 million active users and millions of merchants utilizing the platform, UPI now accounts for nearly 80 percent of India's domestic digital payments. As NPCI International continues to collaborate with foreign markets to build secure, real-time payment infrastructures, the UAE’s involvement signifies a major step toward seamless cross-border financial interoperability. By leveraging the expertise of the "India Stack," these international partnerships aim to replicate the efficiency of India's cashless framework on a global scale.
