Living Through Sharjah's Roadworks: How Residents are Navigating the Daily Commute

Mon, Jun 29, 2026(3h ago)UAE

It has been two weeks since major road improvement projects began in Sharjah, significantly impacting those living in Jamal Abdul Nasser Street, Al Taawun, Al Khan, and parts of the Industrial Area. The construction, while necessary for long-term infrastructure upgrades, has forced residents to completely overhaul their daily routines. From splitting work shifts to avoid peak congestion to walking over a kilometre to reach their homes, the community has turned to creative problem-solving to cope with the ongoing diversions and limited parking access. Neighbourhood WhatsApp groups have become essential hubs for real-time traffic updates, while carpooling and school-run rotations have emerged as practical solutions to help neighbours share the burden of the delays.

Despite the daily frustrations, there is a prevailing sense of patience among the residents, who recognize that these temporary disruptions are a trade-off for a better future road network. Parents are coordinating collective drop-offs for their children, and many workers are opting to navigate the city by foot for the final leg of their journey rather than sitting idle in gridlocked traffic. By embracing flexible working hours and leaning into community collaboration, Sharjah residents are successfully managing the current construction phase while looking forward to the promised relief once the project wraps up later this year.
