Why Traditional Emirati Drinks Like Karak and Gahwa Defy the Seasons

Sat, Jul 4, 2026(45d ago)UAE

In the sweltering heat of the UAE, where summer temperatures frequently soar past 40°C, staying hydrated is a survival necessity. Clinical dietician Areen Rasheed Al Zorba notes that the country’s approach to hydration is a blend of modern nutritional science and ancient Bedouin wisdom. While cooling options like fresh fruit juices and coconut water are popular for immediate relief, the region's historical survival strategies were far more ingenious. Centuries ago, before the convenience of refrigeration, desert communities relied on clay pots to chill water and possessed an intimate, vital knowledge of well locations and natural water sources to navigate the harsh environment.

Despite the intense climate, certain cultural staples like Karak and Gahwa remain popular year-round. While it might seem counterintuitive to reach for a hot beverage in the middle of summer, Al Zorba explains that these drinks are rooted in social rituals and hospitality rather than just physical cooling. Alongside these social staples, traditional drinks like protein-rich Laban serve as practical, effective tools for hydration and digestion. Ultimately, these beverages represent more than just a way to quench one's thirst; they are a flavorful bridge between the UAE’s storied past and its modern lifestyle, preserving the cultural values that define the region.
