Understanding the Surge in Kidney Transplants Across the UAE

Tue, Aug 18, 2026(1h ago)UAE

In the United Arab Emirates, kidney transplants have become the most frequent organ transplant procedure, accounting for 924 of the 1,780 total transplants performed. Medical experts point to two primary drivers behind this trend: the rising prevalence of chronic kidney disease and the unique ability of a living, healthy individual to donate a kidney without compromising their own long-term health. Because a person can lead a normal life with one functioning kidney, living-donor transplantation provides a vital alternative to the long wait for a deceased donor, allowing for planned procedures that can sometimes occur before a patient even requires dialysis.

The underlying surge in kidney failure is largely attributed to lifestyle-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Doctors emphasize that kidney disease often progresses silently, with many patients remaining unaware of their condition until it reaches an advanced stage. While dialysis remains a necessary treatment for many, it often places significant restrictions on a patient’s daily life, work, and travel. Consequently, a successful transplant is generally viewed as the gold standard for restoring quality of life. Despite the success of these programs, there remains a critical need for more donors, as over 4,000 residents in the UAE are currently battling chronic kidney failure. Medical professionals continue to urge the public to undergo early screening for kidney health, as simple tests for protein leaks and function can detect issues long before a transplant becomes the only remaining option.
