India Attempts to Quell Public Outcry Over Ethanol-Blended Fuel Mandate

Sat, Jul 4, 2026(4h ago)World

The Indian government is currently navigating a wave of public frustration regarding the mandatory implementation of E20 fuel—a blend containing 20% ethanol. Motorists across the country have expressed significant concerns, citing decreased fuel efficiency and potential mechanical damage to their vehicles. Tensions recently reached a boiling point after Attorney General R. Venkataramani was caught on video referring to the policy as an "experiment" during a court hearing. Despite the government’s efforts to clarify that his comments were misinterpreted, the viral footage has fueled claims that the administration rushed the rollout of the program without adequate testing or public consultation.

In response to the backlash, government officials have defended the initiative, emphasizing that the shift to ethanol is vital for reducing carbon emissions, lowering crude oil imports, and boosting the agricultural sector. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently attempted to reassure the public by noting that while mileage might slightly decrease, ethanol is a high-performance fuel used in motor racing. However, these justifications have failed to satisfy many drivers, as protest plans gain momentum in New Delhi and social media remains flooded with grievances from vehicle owners who feel they are paying the price for a policy that lacks sufficient data or consumer choice.
