Thai Drug Syndicates Recruit Flight Crew for Smuggling Operations
International drug trafficking rings are increasingly turning to social media to recruit unsuspecting or desperate flight attendants, using platforms like TikTok and Facebook to solicit "carry-for-hire" services. Recent investigations reveal that anonymous accounts, such as one dubbed "Powder is Powder," approach cabin crew members with requests to transport items across borders in exchange for payment. The issue gained urgent attention after an on-duty Thai Airways flight attendant was apprehended in Australia for allegedly smuggling over a kilogram of heroin concealed within tote bags. In response, Thai officials are launching high-level government probes to bolster airport security and combat these sophisticated exploitation tactics.
Thai authorities emphasize that these syndicates often exploit social media groups where people advertise courier services, offering small fees to transport illicit goods. With heroin production surging in neighboring Myanmar due to ongoing conflict and economic instability, traffickers are desperate to move large quantities into profitable international markets. While the ONCB has successfully intercepted additional shipmentsâseizing over 24 kilograms of heroin hidden in clothing and coffee sachetsâthe trend highlights a growing security threat. Officials are now warning air crews to remain vigilant against strangers offering "delivery" jobs, as traffickers continue to hide narcotics in everyday items to bypass border detection.
