Sharjah Ruler Regulates Drone Operations Across the Emirate
Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, has enacted a comprehensive new law to govern the use of drones throughout the emirate. This mandate applies to all unmanned aerial vehicles, regardless of their operational purpose or the technology used to pilot them. The regulations extend to every corner of Sharjah, including free zones and special development areas, and are binding for both private operators and those working on behalf of public entities. While the law is broad, it does provide specific carve-outs for military and security aircraft, as well as any special operations exempted by the Chief of Civil Aviation for reasons of public interest.
This legislative move aligns with the UAEās multi-layered approach to aviation, where operators must adhere to both federal standards and local emirate-specific requirements. As the drone industry continues to mature, officials are balancing the growth of commercial and recreational applications with strict oversight to ensure airspace safety. This follows a period of heightened caution across the nation, including temporary flight suspensions in cities like Dubai, which eventually led to the development of a unified registration and licensing platform. By integrating these local rules into the federal framework, Sharjah is further standardizing the requirements for drone usage to ensure a safe and organized operational environment.
