Urgent Calls for Stricter Penalties After Repeated Road Accidents in the UAE
Following a string of three major accidents in just three months—including a recent collision that left 25 people injured—safety experts in the UAE are demanding an immediate review of traffic regulations and tougher penalties for drivers who stop in the middle of busy roads. RoadSafetyUAE founder Thomas Edelmann believes that current measures are insufficient to deter motorists from creating dangerous obstacles, noting that many of these incidents stem from a lack of driver awareness or poor vehicle maintenance. He argues that authorities need to conduct deep forensic investigations into every breakdown to determine if these incidents are caused by genuine mechanical failures or human error, urging for "super harsh" penalties to protect innocent lives.
Beyond punitive measures, industry leaders are highlighting the necessity of a robust safety culture and better driver education. Experts point out that vehicle breakdowns rarely happen without warning signs, and professional drivers should be trained to recognize mechanical red flags before they become a hazard. Companies are being urged to implement comprehensive defensive driving and fatigue management programs, as vehicle maintenance alone is not enough to prevent these tragedies. For now, officials continue to remind the public that if a breakdown occurs, the priority must be to exit the vehicle safely from the passenger side, use hazard lights, and alert emergency services immediately to prevent further fatalities.
