Abu Dhabi Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Street Car Washing

Thu, Aug 20, 2026(5h ago)UAE

Abu Dhabi’s municipality is intensifying its efforts to eliminate the common practice of washing cars in unauthorized residential spots. Through its "Our Home, Our Responsibility" campaign, officials are educating the public on why street-side cleaning is problematic, highlighting that it leads to unsightly water pooling, damages road infrastructure, and creates breeding grounds for insects. To address these issues, the city is urging residents to ditch DIY street washing and instead utilize professional, licensed facilities that are designed to handle water runoff efficiently.

Beyond the aesthetic impact, authorities are backing their campaign with strict enforcement measures. Residents caught hiring unlicensed street cleaners, as well as the individuals performing the unauthorized work, risk facing significant fines. Furthermore, motorists who abandon dirty vehicles in public spaces may also be penalized with fines of up to Dh2,000, which can double for repeat offenders, potentially resulting in their vehicles being impounded. These regulations are part of a larger initiative to preserve the city’s urban landscape, prevent water wastage, and ensure a cleaner, safer environment for all residents.
