End of an Era: Dubai’s Iconic Toyota Building Set for Demolition

Thu, Aug 20, 2026(3h ago)UAE

The historic Nasser Rashid Lootah Building, widely known as the Toyota building, is officially clearing its rooms as demolition plans move forward. Originally constructed in 1974, just three years after the UAE was established, the 15-storey landmark has served as a central hub for residents for decades. In recent weeks, long-term tenants, including those using the space for company housing, have begun relocating. Building management has been coordinating a phased departure, beginning with residents in partitioned rooms before expanding the request to all occupants as the structure prepares for its final days.

For many, this building is more than just a piece of real estate; it is a vital part of Dubai's skyline history. It famously earned its nickname in 1981, when a massive red neon Toyota sign was installed on its rooftop, becoming a beacon for travelers along Sheikh Zayed Road. Although the iconic sign was briefly removed in 2018 when its advertising contract expired, its return in 2022 sparked a wave of nostalgia among local residents. As the property now faces the wrecking ball, it marks the end of a long chapter for one of the city's most recognizable early architectural staples.
