UAE Mourns the Loss of Education Pioneer Prof KK Abdul Gaffar
The academic community in the UAE is currently mourning the passing of Prof KK Abdul Gaffar, a distinguished techno-educationalist and engineer who left an indelible mark on the regionâs medical education landscape. At the age of 82, Prof Gaffar passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 5, as confirmed by his son, Dr. Shajir Gaffar. Remembered for his quiet yet profound leadership, he was instrumental in the early development of Gulf Medical University in Ajman. Dr. Thumbay Moideen, founder of the Thumbay Group, paid tribute to his former colleague, noting that Prof Gaffarâs administrative expertise and unwavering discipline were vital during the institution's formative years.
Beyond his contributions to the UAE, Prof Gaffar enjoyed a storied career in India, where he held senior roles at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut and the TKM College of Engineering. His influence extended well beyond the lecture hall; he was a dedicated author whose autobiography, "Njan Saakshi" (I Am a Witness), gained significant attention after being launched by cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni. As both a builder of institutions and a mentor to countless students, Prof Gaffar leaves behind a legacy of academic excellence and public service that will be remembered by those he inspired throughout his life.
