Managing UAE Summer AC Usage for Better Respiratory Health

Sat, Jul 11, 2026(2h ago)UAE

As summer temperatures in the UAE climb past 40°C, residents rely heavily on air conditioning to stay comfortable. However, moving frequently between intense outdoor heat and frigid indoor environments can lead to "thermal shock," putting significant strain on the body's internal regulatory systems. Medical professionals warn that this constant fluctuation, combined with prolonged exposure to cold, dry air, can trigger health issues like tension headaches, fatigue, brain fog, and severe dryness in the eyes and throat. Vulnerable individuals, particularly those with asthma, allergies, or cardiovascular conditions, are at an even higher risk of experiencing these adverse effects.

Beyond the impact of temperature swings, poorly maintained cooling systems can become breeding grounds for dust and mould, which may exacerbate respiratory problems. To mitigate these risks, doctors suggest maintaining indoor temperatures between 23°C and 25°C rather than blasting the AC to excessively cold levels. Simple habits—such as staying well-hydrated, avoiding direct airflow from vents, wearing extra layers in chilly offices, and ensuring that AC filters are cleaned regularly—can go a long way in keeping you healthy. By using air conditioning mindfully, residents can effectively protect themselves against heat-related illnesses while avoiding the common pitfalls of artificial cooling.
