From Home Brewing to Global Stage: The Resilient Journey of an Emirati Coffee Entrepreneur

Mon, Jul 27, 2026(44m ago)UAE

Obaid Ateeq Alkaabi’s journey into the coffee industry was almost cut short in 2017 after a single disparaging comment shattered his confidence and led him to abandon his first business venture. For years, his passion for coffee had been rooted in the rich traditions of Emirati hospitality he grew up watching at home. Though he spent years studying roasteries and honing his craft, that one negative review weighed heavily on him, serving as a harsh lesson in the dangers of letting a single opinion dictate his path. It wasn't until after his wife underwent medical treatment in the United States that his perspective shifted; encouraged by her belief in his potential, the couple decided to stop overthinking and turn their shared dream into reality, eventually launching "Slow Drip" from their own backyard in 2024.

The momentum grew rapidly as Slow Drip transitioned from a home-based setup to a prominent fixture at Global Village, allowing Obaid to showcase not just his coffee, but the depth of Emirati culture and etiquette. His success, including a notable performance at the Emirati Coffee Championship, has allowed him to represent his heritage on an international stage while acting as a mentor to other aspiring entrepreneurs. Today, with plans to expand into a permanent café in Baniyas and beyond, Obaid remains committed to the communal spirit that once helped him. He views his business as more than just a retail venture; it is a platform for sharing knowledge, supporting fellow small business owners, and preserving the values of generosity and respect that define his craft.
