From Emirati Engineer to Global Marathoner: The Journey of Salem Al Hashemi
For Salem Al Hashemi, a 34-year-old civil engineer and father of five, the path to becoming an elite marathon runner began as a simple challenge of curiosity. During the pandemic, a nudge from his brother led him to enter a 10km race in Abu Dhabi, a distance he had never previously attempted. His impressive performance—finishing as the second-fastest Emirati—ignited a transformation that shifted his focus from CrossFit and football to the global stage. Since then, he has balanced a demanding full-time career and family responsibilities with a rigorous training regimen of up to 100km per week, eventually completing all eight races in the expanded Abbott World Marathon Majors series, all while funding his journey through his own passion and dedication.
The road to success was far from linear, marked by physical obstacles and intense mental battles. Al Hashemi vividly remembers the agony of cramping mere meters from the finish line during his early races, a trial that taught him the necessity of mental fortitude over sheer physical strength. Whether facing the isolating silence of the New York Marathon or the grueling incline of Boston’s "Heartbreak Hill" while managing an injury, he has learned to push past his body’s limitations through disciplined, solo training sessions. His ability to apply an engineer's mindset to his life—carefully planning every aspect of his schedule around work, family, and training—has allowed him to represent the UAE on the international stage with pride. Honored by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Al Hashemi views these accomplishments not as a final destination, but as stepping stones toward the next great challenge in his ongoing athletic journey.
