Abu Dhabi Eyes Greener Future with Major Waste-to-Energy Milestone
Abu Dhabi is making significant strides in its sustainability goals, with the Al Bihouth Waste-to-Energy Facility now 90 percent complete. As the project nears commissioning, it is set to play a pivotal role in the emirate's vision to convert half of all household waste into electricity by the end of 2026. Once fully operational, the plant is projected to process roughly 900,000 tonnes of waste every year, generating sufficient power to support approximately 52,000 homes and drastically reducing the reliance on landfills.
The project recently hit several critical benchmarks, including successful boiler pressure tests and an impressive safety record of six million working hours without a single lost-time injury. A collaborative effort between the Tadweer Group, Marubeni Corporation, and Kanadevia Inova, this facility represents a vital shift toward a circular economy. Leadership from the involved organizations emphasized that this milestone is not just about waste processing, but about creating reliable, long-term infrastructure while maintaining the highest safety standards for the workforce.
