Christie's Brings $130 Million Art Showcase to Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is set to become the epicenter of the art world as it hosts its inaugural Christie’s fine art auction on November 1. Held at The Abu Dhabi EDITION in Al Bateen Marina, the event, titled "Mawasim: 20 Years of Modern and Contemporary Middle Eastern Art," celebrates two decades of the house’s presence in the region. Leading up to the auction, the public can view an impressive collection valued at over $130 million, including rare international masterpieces destined for New York, such as Wassily Kandinsky’s Betonte Ecken—expected to break auction records—alongside significant works by Mark Rothko and Pablo Picasso.
The auction itself highlights the depth of regional talent, featuring 70 pieces spanning nine decades of Middle Eastern and North African art. Notable consignments from prestigious institutions like the Dalloul Collection and the Barjeel Art Foundation include works by Fahrelnissa Zeid, Samia Halaby, and the late Sliman Mansour. According to Dr. Ridha Moumni, chairman of Christie's Middle East and Africa, the timing of this showcase aligns perfectly with a thriving local arts scene, bolstered by the upcoming Frieze Abu Dhabi and the highly anticipated opening of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. As interest from both local Emirati collectors and international buyers continues to surge, this event underscores the UAE’s growing influence as a global hub for modern and contemporary art.
