Dubai Woman Faces Heavy Penalties After Selling Counterfeit Luxury Watch
A Dubai woman has been hit with significant legal consequences after being caught selling a counterfeit Patek Philippe watch for a staggering Dh700,000. The victim, who purchased the timepiece under the impression that it was a genuine luxury item, quickly discovered the fraud and reported the incident to the authorities. Following a rigorous legal battle, the Dubai Misdemeanour Court found the woman guilty of fraud, ordering her to pay a Dh10,000 fine and mandating the confiscation of the fake watch. Despite multiple attempts to appeal the decision through both the Court of Appeal and the Court of Cassation, the original criminal conviction was upheld, confirming the illicit nature of the sale.
Beyond the criminal penalties, the victim pursued a civil lawsuit to recover his significant financial loss. The Dubai Civil Court sided with the buyer, ruling that the woman must return the full Dh700,000, plus an additional 5 percent annual legal interest starting from the date of the civil judgement. She was also held responsible for all associated court fees and legal expenses. This case serves as a stern reminder of the severe legal repercussions in Dubai for engaging in fraudulent luxury goods transactions, as the courts successfully bridged the gap between criminal accountability and civil restitution.
