ADNOC Tanker Leaks Fuel Following Iranian Drone Strike
A subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) confirmed that the M.V. Barakah, one of its tankers, suffered a fuel leak while anchored off the coast of Oman. The vessel was targeted by two Iranian drones on May 4, a hostile act that has amplified concerns regarding the environmental safety of regional shipping lanes. ADNOC Logistics and Services stated they are actively collaborating with specialized response teams and local authorities to manage the situation, though the exact volume of the bunker fuel spill remains undisclosed.
Satellite imagery captured by Copernicus Sentinel recently identified a visible trail extending from the tanker near the Musandam Peninsula, providing visual confirmation of the leak. While experts from Data Desk noted that the trail was clearly consistent with an oil release, subsequent analysis by scientists at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory suggests the slick has since dissipated. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the mounting risks to maritime ecology and international trade as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to leave hundreds of vessels in a precarious position.
