UAE Authorities Crack Down on Offensive Online Content

Fri, Aug 21, 2026(2h ago)UAE

The UAE’s National Media Authority has recently taken a firm stance against social media users who share material deemed insulting or harmful to societal values. In two separate incidents, including a case involving derogatory remarks directed at Emirati women, authorities suspended the "Mu’lin" advertising permits of those responsible. These actions serve as a clear reminder that digital creators and residents alike are held to high standards, as the government continues to prioritize the protection of national identity, cultural heritage, and public morals across all online platforms.

Under the current media regulations, content that incites hate, spreads misinformation, violates privacy, or disrespects state institutions can lead to significant penalties, ranging from heavy fines of up to Dh2 million to the permanent revocation of media licenses. It is important to note that the pursuit of viral engagement or "likes" is not a valid excuse for crossing these legal boundaries. Before hitting "publish," users are encouraged to verify their information and consider whether their content could be perceived as offensive or divisive. By adhering to these guidelines and respecting local values, social media users can ensure their online activity remains within the bounds of the law.
