Abu Dhabi Police Urge Pedestrians to Prioritize Safety and Avoid Jaywalking
Abu Dhabi Police recently issued a stern reminder to the public regarding the dangers of jaywalking, emphasizing that road safety is a responsibility shared by both drivers and pedestrians. Through a series of awareness videos, officials highlighted the life-threatening risks associated with crossing multi-lane highways outside of designated zones. Pedestrians are strongly encouraged to utilize official crosswalks, footbridges, and underpasses, while also paying close attention to traffic signals. Simultaneously, the authorities reminded motorists to stay vigilant, reduce their speed when approaching crossings, and always yield to those on foot.
This initiative is part of the police force's broader âSmart Road Securityâ strategy, which seeks to minimize traffic accidents and ensure a safer environment for everyone. Authorities also warned against common distractions, such as mobile phone use, which can lead to fatal lapses in judgment while crossing. It is important to remember that jaywalking is illegal in the UAE and carries a Dh400 fine. The consequences grow significantly more severe if a pedestrian causes an accident, with penalties ranging from hefty fines of up to Dh10,000 to potential imprisonment, particularly when the offense occurs on high-speed roads.
