UAE Resident Fined for Defaming Relative on Social Media
A 27-year-old Indian national living in the UAE has been ordered to pay a Dh3,000 fine after being convicted of defamation. The man used his social media platform to post a private photograph of a female relative, accompanying the image with derogatory comments that attacked her character and reputation. He further escalated the situation by posting a picture of her father, subjecting him to similar verbal abuse. The victim, who is married to one of the man’s relatives, reported the incident to the police, stating that the unauthorized posts caused her immense humiliation and social distress among their family circles.
During the legal proceedings, the defendant attempted to deflect blame by claiming the victim had accessed his phone and posted the content herself using a known password. However, the court dismissed this defense as implausible. Forensic experts analyzed the electronic evidence and confirmed the man’s involvement, providing enough proof for a conviction. While the court found him guilty of the offense, it ultimately opted for a lenient sentence, finalizing the case with a Dh3,000 penalty.
