No Radiation Leak Reported Following Drone Incident at Barakah Nuclear Plant

Sun, May 17, 2026(51d ago)UAE

Authorities in Abu Dhabi have confirmed that a fire which broke out at an electrical generator near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant was caused by a drone strike. Fortunately, the incident resulted in no injuries, and officials have emphasized that there is no risk of radiation leakage. The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) clarified that the plant’s core systems remain completely operational and that all four reactor units are continuing to function as intended, maintaining standard safety protocols without interruption.

This event marks a significant point of concern, as it is the first time a drone-related attack has occurred in such close proximity to a nuclear facility in the region. Amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions that have seen various energy and civilian sites targeted, the government is urging the public to avoid circulating unverified rumors. As a cornerstone of the UAE’s energy strategy, the Barakah plant continues to supply roughly 25% of the nation’s electricity, operating under rigorous oversight to ensure the safety and environmental security of the region.
