UAE Denounces Drone Strike Near Barakah Nuclear Facility
The United Arab Emirates has issued a stern condemnation following a drone strike that targeted an electricity generator near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region. According to the Ministry of Defence, three drones crossed into Emirati territory from the western border, with air defense systems successfully intercepting two of them. The third drone struck a facility outside the plant’s inner perimeter, causing a fire but resulting in no casualties or radiation leaks. Officials have labeled the incident an "unacceptable act of aggression" and a flagrant violation of international law, emphasizing that the UAE remains committed to defending its sovereignty and the safety of its critical infrastructure.
While the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that radiation levels remain normal and the plant's four reactor units are operating as usual, the attack has drawn significant international concern. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned that any military activity threatening nuclear safety is unacceptable, reiterating the necessity of shielding such facilities from armed conflict. Investigations into the origin of the drones are currently underway. This incident marks a serious escalation, as it represents the first time a strike has occurred in such close proximity to the nation’s vital nuclear energy hub, which provides a significant portion of the country's electricity.
