UAE Cracks Down on Counterfeit Goods with Stiff Penalties
The UAE government has launched a stern warning to both consumers and sellers regarding the dangers of counterfeit, adulterated, and spoiled goods. Authorities are emphasizing that purchasing such items poses significant risks to public health and personal safety, particularly when it comes to regulated products like food, cosmetics, and medication. To stay safe, residents are encouraged to stick to licensed retailers and verified online platforms, always verifying product origins and expiry dates while ensuring they keep receipts and warranty cards for every purchase.
To tackle the rise in commercial fraud, the UAE has implemented Federal Decree-Law No. 42 of 2023, which establishes a zero-tolerance policy for the production, sale, or distribution of fake goods. Engaging in these activities—or even attempting them—is considered a criminal offense that can lead to severe consequences. Violators face serious penalties, including jail time of up to two years and hefty fines reaching as high as Dh1 million. By holding sellers accountable and urging the public to report suspicious advertisements, the UAE aims to maintain a secure marketplace and protect consumers from the financial and physical harm caused by fraudulent trading practices.
