The Summer Struggle: UAE Parents Grapple with Rising Childcare Costs
As the UAE summer break kicks off, families are finding it increasingly difficult to balance keeping their children entertained with the harsh reality of household budgets. While parents are eager to move their kids away from screens and into productive activities, the landscape of summer options is looking bleak. Free community programs are filling up almost instantly, leaving many behind, while commercial summer camps often demand hundreds of dirhams per week, becoming an impossible expense for families with multiple children.
Many parents are now bypassing organized camps altogether, opting for domestic tourism and local outings to manage costs. Mothers interviewed shared that even a simple day out at a mall or local attraction can easily cost between Dh300 and Dh1,500, depending on the family size and activities. As a result, some are choosing to tour different regions of the UAE instead of traveling abroad, viewing it as a way to both save money and help their children connect with their own country. Despite these creative adjustments, the lack of affordable, accessible childcare remains a significant stressor for parents trying to provide a fulfilling summer experience without breaking the bank.
