Tragic Drowning of UAE Teen Sparks Urgent Calls for Dam Safety
A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Ras Al Khaimah when 16-year-old Rashed Juma Ali Al Mazrouei lost his life after slipping into the Wadi Adhen Dam. The Grade 10 student had been out for a bicycle ride with his cousin when the pair stopped near the water to clean mud off their feet. As Rashed approached the edge, he lost his footing and fell into the water. Despite his cousin’s desperate attempts to assist him, Rashed, who was unable to swim, tragically drowned before family members or rescue teams could intervene.
In the aftermath of the accident, Rashed’s father has made a poignant appeal for authorities to enhance safety protocols at dams and water reservoirs across the region. He highlighted the glaring absence of protective barriers, warning signs, and rescue equipment, which left the area dangerously exposed to unsuspecting visitors. The grieving father emphasized that while this is the first such incident in the vicinity, the lack of safety infrastructure poses an unnecessary risk. He hopes that by speaking out, he can prevent other families from enduring a similar loss, urging for urgent measures to secure these sites and protect the community.
