UAE Fatwa Council to Observe Dhul Hijjah Moon on May 17

Tue, May 12, 2026(56d ago)UAE

The UAE Fatwa Council has officially scheduled the moon sighting for the month of Dhul Hijjah on the evening of Sunday, May 17, 2026. This process will be a collaborative effort involving national observatories and specialized centers across the country, including the International Astronomy Centre and the relevant departments in Dubai and Sharjah. Using advanced astronomical technology, authorities will determine if the crescent is visible; if spotted, the new month will commence on May 18, whereas a failure to sight the moon would mean the current month continues for an additional day, starting Dhul Hijjah on May 19.

The determination of these dates is highly anticipated as it sets the calendar for significant Islamic observances, including the sacred Day of Arafah and Eid al-Adha. With many residents planning for the upcoming holiday, the government has already outlined school and public sector breaks, with potential leave spanning up to nine or even ten days for some employees. While astronomical projections suggest that Eid al-Adha may fall on May 27, officials emphasize that the official confirmation remains strictly dependent on the physical sighting of the crescent moon.
