Legal Experts Warn Against Sharing Vehicle Number Plates Online in UAE

Wed, May 20, 2026(48d ago)UAE

Legal experts in the UAE are urging residents to exercise extreme caution when posting videos on social media that feature vehicle number plates. While capturing footage in public spaces is not inherently illegal, the situation changes significantly when that content is used to mock, shame, or publicly accuse individuals. Lawyers emphasize that the intent behind the post is the deciding factor; if the footage is shared to damage someone’s reputation or expose them to online harassment, it can easily cross the line into privacy violations and serious cybercrime offenses under UAE law.

Under Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021, those found guilty of misusing technology to invade privacy or defame others face severe penalties, including hefty fines ranging from Dh150,000 to Dh500,000 and potential imprisonment. Legal professionals point out that this liability extends beyond the original creator of the content. Anyone who reposts, shares, or endorses defamatory material involving identifiable vehicle information can also be held accountable, as their actions contribute to the spread of harm. Consequently, authorities advise social media users to think twice before hitting the "share" button, as a single click could lead to significant legal repercussions.
